Почему добавление в еду перцев-пряностей называется seasoning, мне было всегда не очень понятно. Но то, что "поспевать, созревать" тоже оказалось to season, помогло связать season - время года с seasoning - приправлением еды. Да, связь довольно зыбкая и интуитивная, но да, я ее чувствую.

А еще на днях за едой читала со скуки банку с солью, и узнала, что слово salary - тех времен, когда в древнем Риме соль использовалась вместо денег.

The word SEASON comes from the concept of seed time; that is to say, the time to sow, to put seeds in the earth. In the dark ages when people somehow survived without the aid of an appointment book or a calendar, the different times of the year were not spoken of in terms of months and dates, but of the most characteristic activity of that time of the year. SEASON extended its meaning from "seeding period" to any period of the year: hunting season, mating season (for animals), harvest season, etc.

The word SEASONING (or the verb SEASON) meaning to spread salt, pepper or other spices on food also comes from the "seed-time" SEASON. This SEASONING was originally a reference to the action of spreading seeds by hand. To season in this sense was to seed the taste.

Прочтя это, я поняла, что для меня season еще ассоциируется со словом "сезам", то есть с семенами. Поэтому так легко выстроилась ассоциация в голове.

Сезон - Сеятень. Решето (sieve) - сеево.
