Я почти год сочиняла свой опрос, а потом два месяца пыталась дергать за все доступные и недоступные ниточки, чтобы уговорить людей его заполнять. За два месяца "уговорилось" восемь человек, и я уже начала подозревать, что мне предстоит пополнить ряды тех, кто так никогда и не закончил свою диссертацию...
И вот сегодня "кликнуло". Правильный человек разослал ссылку правильным людям с правильной приманкой. Сижу и жму на Refresh, чтобы увидеть, как поступивших за сегодня ответов станет ровно сто. Хочется пробежаться босиком по улице с поросячьим визгом.

if I had a correct general answer, I would have won a Nobel already.
at the very least, you should constantly remind yourself that all your conclusions are only applicable to people who responded to the survey.
you might try to figure out who responded and how they are different from the actual target population.
if you know your target population in advance, you could sample it yourself and then add a "refused to participate" response to those who refused.

How it will help me to constantly remind myself? Imho, it is more than enough to write it down once in the paper's "Method" section and keep remind myself about more important components of my work.
Btw, real sampling my target population, with names etc, will never pass IRB.
